Travel award for members

A travel award for members is available in 2026.

The NZPPS may offer a travel grant to longstanding members for conference attendance and/or training, either nationally or internationally. Travel Award funds are set annually by the Executive Committee based on the financial situation of the Society. No travel award will be given In some years if there are insufficient funds.

Eligibility

  • NZPPS welcomes applications from current members, including technical staff and scientists.
  • Applicants must be current financial members of NZPPS and have paid ordinary membership for 5+ consecutive years. Contact the secretary to check your eligibility.
  • Recipients of the travel award in the previous 3 years are ineligible to apply.
  • Current Executive members are ineligible to apply.
  • Applicants must describe the value of their proposed travel to plant protection in New Zealand.
  • Applicants will need to list all international scientific research and conference travel they have made in the previous 3 years, as preference will be given to those who have had less opportunity to travel.
  • Applicants will need to have endorsement of their application as a true record from their current employer or direct manager.
  • Funds must be used within 1 year of receipt (normally August) except in the case of unforeseen circumstances (e.g., a global pandemic) affecting domestic and/or international travel. In such cases, the award may be held by the recipient for a maximum of 3 years provided written reason/s are given and accepted by the Committee and that the objectives of the travel and role of the recipient have not changed.
  • The successful applicant will be required to write a short report for the NZPPS newsletter detailing benefits derived upon their return from travel within 3 weeks. The recipient does not need to be present at the conference dinner in order to receive the award but attendance is strongly encouraged.

Application process

  1. Make your application by completing the form below.
  2. Applications must be received by the secretary by 1 July.
  3. A subcommittee from the Executive Committee will: screen application forms; disqualify those that do not meet the eligibility criteria above; and decides on up to 10 finalists. When there are more than 10 eligible applications, the finalists are to be decided on the basis of benefits to New Zealand plant protection, with preference for those applicants who have had less opportunity for travel in previous years.
  4. At the annual NZPPS conference dinner, the names of the finalists are placed in a hat and the NZPPS President randomly draws the winner.
