The NZPPS is holding a one-day symposium at the Stamford Plaza, Auckland, on Monday 12th August 2019 ahead of the annual conference to convene researchers from across the country actively working on Phytophthora biology and management. With the growth of awareness and interest in Phytophthora pathogens across plant systems we have assembled a broad range of speakers and have invited four international speakers, to lead each of four sessions, to bring a unique global perspective to the discussion.

Keynote speakers:

Dr Niklaus Grunwald, Research Plant Pathologist, USDA Agricultural Research Service, Cornvallis, Oregon
Nik’s laboratory conducts research on the epidemiology, ecology, population biology and molecular genetics of Phytophthora species.

Dr Richard Cobb, Natural Resources Management & Environmental Sciences, California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis, California
Richard’s research interests focus on understanding the underlying drivers, ecological impacts, and potential responses to insect and disease outbreak. Past and current projects aim to improve prediction of when, where, and why outbreaks occur as well as forest-level experimentation to change the course of outbreaks and reduce their economic and ecological costs.

Dr Sarah Green, Forest Pathologist and Programme Manager, Forest Research, Scotland

Sarah is responsible for management of the Forest Research Northern Research Station’s (NRS) pathology laboratory, and for developing and carrying out research projects to address important tree health problems in UK forests, focusing on oomycete, fungal and bacterial diseases.

Dr Mariella Marzano, Senior Social Scientist, Forest Research, Scotland
Mariella contributes to a variety of interdisciplinary research programmes including social dimension of tree health, adaptive forest management, human-wildlife interactions, green network planning for people and biodiversity and risk management and communication.
