Biosecurity Outbreaks – the Past and Present Informing the Future
Monday 10 August 2026
Napier War Memorial Centre, Marine Parade, Napier
The 2026 NZPPS Symposium Biosecurity Outbreaks – the Past and Present Informing the Future offers the opportunity to examine current and emerging biosecurity threats in New Zealand. The morning sessions will focus on the biology and spread of past and emerging outbreaks, recent outbreaks and learning from advances in understanding the biology and pathways of spread (natural, human-assisted and insect-vectored) across forestry, horticulture, cropping systems and environmental systems (e.g. Psa in kiwifruit, pea weevil, TPP, kauri dieback, yellow legged hornet, fruit fly, wilding pine and coco peat weeds).
Afternoon sessions will look ahead to future risks and preparedness, with discussion of emerging threats from plant pathogens, insect pests and vectors and weeds. The symposium brings together researchers, industry representatives, biosecurity response partners and practitioners to share knowledge and discuss strategies to strengthen New Zealand’s biosecurity response systems.
