New Zealand’s food producers face significant challenges as the incidence of pest and pathogen resistance to agrichemicals increases and our global consumers are increasingly demanding safe, sustainably produced food. In a changing climate, we also need tools to respond to pest and disease incursions. There is no single way to address current and future challenges in crop protection challenges and now, more than ever, we need to be working together to develop new approaches and suites of tools to protect our crops, maintain our export markets, and secure premiums for sustainably produced food.

This symposium will bring together leading scientists, international experts, representatives from government agencies, and sector and industry leaders to highlight new and emerging science and technologies needed for crop protection into the future. The Symposium also aims to support networking and building of new collaborations needed to develop multi-disciplinary solutions. Interactive panel sessions will provide opportunities to challenge current crop protection paradigms and address barriers to progress. Download the Symposium flyer here.

Themes for the day:

Trends in crop protection – from global to local. Invited speakers will set the scene for the day, providing updates on global trends, opportunities arising from “over-the-horizon” solutions, and upcoming challenges.

Emerging science and future tools. Leading scientists will profile latest research on discovery and use of emerging tools, for example, novel bio-actives, RNAi-based tools, genetically engineered crops, microbial products, soft chemistries, and sensing technologies.

Commercial realities and opportunities.  Learn from industry experts sharing their experience with streamlining the commercial development and implementation of new crop protection solutions. Explore NZ-unique opportunities for increasingly sustainable crop protection.

Creating momentum – enabling systems. Hear about the latest developments in agri-technologies, needed to synergise and implement future solutions for our sectors.

We are currently looking for sponsorship for this symposium. Options are available to suit all budgets.

The day will conclude with a networking and poster session.  Poster presenters: please complete the abstract template and submit it by 5 July 2024.

The Symposium is jointly hosted by the New Zealand Plant Protection Society, AgResearch’s Agrichemical-Light Solutions for a Sustainable Future programme, A Lighter Touch SFFF programme and Plant & Food Research.

The day is made possible by our generous sponsors: AgResearch, Agrichemical Light programme, Grasslanz, A Lighter Touch, PFR, BioSouth and Corteva.

The opening session of the NZPPS conference, commencing on 13 August, will be directly aligned with the Symposium and we welcome submission of presentations and papers on the Theme of Crop Protection for Aotearoa in 2050. Conference abstracts can be submitted before 31 May at:
